James Madison Charitable Trust (JMCT) & Local Government Information Unit (LGIU)

JMCT gave financial support to an LGIU project looking at the current context for, and challenges facing, Local Government. A series of seminars – involving local authority leading members and senior officers and external specialists – is considering current major issues. These involve inter alia:-

i. Relationship between Westminster and local government; legal entrenchment; number and role of tiers of sub-national government,

ii. Finance:- self-sufficiency and/or redistribution; impact of devolution.

iii.Interface between state and citizen; access to public services; democracy and impact of devolution.

iv. Leadership:- its role; different models; regions and metro mayors.


Following the seminars a report will be issued for circulation and further discussion etc.
